Report: One team was willing to give Drew Brees $60 million guaranteed

By Matthew Coller

You don’t have to be a mathematician to add this one up.

On Monday, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the Minnesota Vikings called the agent for Drew Brees to check on his potential availability in free agency.

On Tuesday, the Vikings reportedly agreed to a fully guaranteed contract with Kirk Cousins.

Later on Tuesday, a report from ESPN’s Mike Triplett was published citing a source that said one team was willing to pay Brees $60 million guaranteed to leave New Orleans.

Triplett wrote:

“But the Saints have made it clear that they want to pay Brees just one year at a time now that he is 39 years old. And for the third consecutive year, the future Hall of Famer was willing to offer the Saints a bit of a “hometown discount” in terms of the length of his contract. In 2016, he signed just a one-year extension, and last year he let his deal play out without pushing for an early renewal.”

Brees led the NFL last season in yards per attempt and set an NFL record for completion percentage.
