Report: Vikings reach out to Drew Brees as NFL’s legal tampering period opens

By Judd Zulgad

While Vikings fans await word on whether Kirk Cousins will sign a rich three-year deal to become the team’s next quarterback, Vikings executives were exploring all of their options for a starting QB on Monday.

That included making a call to the Saints’ Drew Brees as the NFL’s legal tampering period opened at 11 a.m. Monday. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network had the report from the team’s new headquarters in Eagan.

Just said on @nflnetwork: The #Vikings have made a call on Drew Brees, per league source. Their plan going into the day was to engage agents for all their QB options. Well, Brees is technically available. No stone unturned.

Players can’t sign until the league’s new year begins at 3 p.m. Wednesday, but Brees, as of now, is going to be a free agent on Wednesday and the Vikings have plenty of experience bringing in an aging and future Hall of Fame quarterback.

In 2009, that player was Brett Favre. Favre had one of his best seasons that year before wrapping up his career with a disappointing 2010.

Brees, 39, threw 23 touchdowns for the Saints last season and the expectation has been that he will return to New Orleans. But Brees has yet to come to terms with the Saints, leaving the door open for the Vikings and other teams to reach out.
