Three Vikings make impact for NFC in Pro Bowl defeat

By Judd Zulgad

A week after getting blown out in the NFC title game by the Philadelphia Eagles, a few Vikings had far better performances Sunday. Unfortunately, it came in a game that did not matter.

Wide receiver Adam Thielen caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Saints quarterback Drew Brees in the first quarter, and safety Harrison Smith returned a second-quarter interception of a Ben Roethlisberger pass 79 yards for a touchdown for the NFC in a 24-23 loss to the AFC in the Pro Bowl in Orlando, Fla.

Thielen and Smith accounted for the first two touchdowns of the game as the NFC jumped out to a 20-3 halftime lead before the AFC rallied in the final 30 minutes. Thielen finished the game with three receptions on five targets for 25 yards.

Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph, who replaced injured Saints tight end Jimmy Graham on the NFC roster, had a game-high seven receptions on eight targets for 70 yards with a long catch of 16 yards.

Thielen, Smith and Rudolph were joined in the Pro Bowl by teammates Xavier Rhodes and Linval Joseph. Anthony Barr and Everson Griffen also were selected but did not participate because of injuries.

Rhodes finished Sunday with four tackles and broke up a pass. Joseph had one tackle.
