Zimmer: Lions’ O-line key to Stafford’s career resurgence

By Matthew Coller

Before the Detroit Lions changed offensive coordinators midway through the 2015 regular season, Lions fans may have been wondering if Matthew Stafford was the answer at quarterback.

But since Jim Bob Cooter was hired, Stafford has 37 touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 105.3 quarterback rating in 18 games. Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said Tuesday he has noticed significant improvements in Detroit’s ability to protect their QB.

“There’s a lot of the same scheme things but [Stafford] seems to be playing at a much more comfortable level,” Zimmer said. “Honestly, I think Ron Prince has done a great job with the offensive line. They are much better in pass protection. I think he feels more comfortable in the pocket.”

Last year, the Vikings sacked Stafford seven times for a loss of 59 yards in a 28-19 win. In their first matchup this year, Minnesota only sacked him once.

Pro Football Focus’s highest two grades for Lions linemen are tackle Taylor Decker, who ranks 21st at his position and Travis Swanson is 11th among centers.

The O-line may be helped by the quick-pass nature of the Lions’ offense. Stafford leads the league in percentage of his total yards that are made up by Yards After Catch.
