Bleacher Report – Vikings

Larry Fitzgerald includes Stefon Diggs on a list of great NFL receivers

By Derek Wetmore

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. – Larry Fitzgerald is either one of the most humble and gracious superstar athletes of his generation, or he’s a great actor. The Minneapolis-native is a regular target for QB Carson Palmer. He’s also a go-to guy for media.

On a conference call with reporters from Minnesota media, Fitzgerald downplayed the importance of a trip back to his home state. He refused to be distracted by the glitzy new stadium that sits on the plot of land where the Metrodome used to live. He called this weekend a business trip and said he had just one objective.

Then he was asked what separates athletically gifted wide receivers from those that have the tools and put them to use to produce results year after year after year. The reporter was referring to Fitzgerald, whose numbers at age 33 – 68 catches for 687 yards and 5 touchdowns in 9 games – would seem to belie the fact that he’s in his 13th NFL season.

“A lot of that has to do with just your preparation and how you’re built,” he said.

Perhaps he was just being modest, but he listed a group of great wideouts who have those two intersecting traits and he didn’t include himself on the list. Oh, and he put a certain Vikings wide receiver in some awfully elite company.

“These guys now — with the Stefon Diggses and the Julio Joneses and the Antonio Browns and Odell Beckhams and A.J. Greens of the world – I mean, these guys are physical specimens, they can run, they can jump. But you can tell that those kind of skills are not just – you don’t just roll out of bed with those skills. Those are skills that have been honed and sharpened over the years.

“And I think that’s why you see those guys have the success they’re able to because they work at their craft and I think that’s a great sign. The receiver position in the National Football League is in a very strong place right now.”

Diggs is in his second year after the Vikings drafted him in the 5th round out of Maryland last year. He has 61 catches for 710 yards and 2 touchdowns this season, which includes 13 catches in each of his past two games.
