Vikings offensive line loses another one; LT Jake Long tears Achilles tendon

By Derek Wetmore

The Vikings already were stretched thin along the offensive line and now it might be about to get worse.

Jake Long has a torn Achilles tendon, Mike Zimmer told reporters after Sunday’s loss to Washington. He had to be carted off the field during the team’s final drive with what appeared to be a badly injured left leg.

Long was signed this year as a free agent to try to patch the Vikings’ bad offensive line with an experienced but unemployed tackle. Long, who has a history of knee injuries, is likely done for the season.

The former No. 1 overall pick (2008) has had a history of knee injuries. This latest injury could potentially end his NFL career.

The Vikings are without starting left tackle Matt Kalil, who is on injured reserve with a hip injury. They’ve also had to replace starting right tackle Andre Smith (who struggled even when healthy) and guard Mike Harris, who has been out since training camp with an undisclosed illness.

Head coach Mike Zimmer called out his offense for being “soft” last month, and many believed the criticism was targeted at the O-line.

The Vikings have one tackle on the practice squad (Austin Shepherd). Offensive line coach Tony Sparano may have to get creative now that Minnesota has lost yet another tackle.
