Vikings’ latest loss overshadows record-setting day for Stefon Diggs

By Judd Zulgad

The Vikings have lost four consecutive games, their running game is non-existent and their kicker can’t be counted on to complete even the easiest of assignments.

All of these issues made it very easy to overlook the accomplishment of wide receiver Stefon Diggs in the Vikings’ 26-20 loss on Sunday in Washington.

Diggs caught 13 passes for 164 yards after finishing with 13 receptions for 80 yards in a loss to the Lions last week. That makes Diggs the first receiver in NFL history to catch 13 or more passes in consecutive games.

The 13 catches is the third-most ever in a game for a Vikings player behind running back Rickey Young (15 catches at New England on Dec. 16, 1979) and wide receiver Cris Carter (14 catches at Arizona on Oct. 2, 1994).

Sunday marked the first time Diggs played in an NFL game in front of family and friends. He is from Gathersburg, Md., and was a fifth-round pick by the Vikings in 2015 out of Maryland.

Not surprisingly, Diggs did not take much satisfaction in setting a record in a loss. “It hurt a little bit,” Diggs said, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. “I want to win for my family and for this team. I want to do everything I can. Just back to the drawing board. Continue to scrap and continue to work hard.”

Diggs had 52 receptions for 720 yards with four touchdowns in 13 games last season. In eight games this year, Diggs already has surpassed his 2015 reception total, accumulating 61 catches for 710 yards and two touchdowns.

Those numbers would be more impressive if he hadn’t missed the Vikings’ victory over Houston in Week 5 because of a groin injury.

Diggs’ next opportunity to continue his streak of double-digit receptions will come next Sunday against Arizona at U.S. Bank Stadium. Diggs had only two catches for 12 yards in the Vikings’ loss last Dec. 10 in Arizona.

Given the frequency with which Sam Bradford is looking for Diggs, he has been targeted 29 times in the past two games, Diggs is likely to again be a primary focus of the Arizona defense.
