Instant analysis: Washington off to hot start 7-0

By Matthew Coller

The Minnesota Vikings (5-3) are on the road against Washington (4-3-1). Here is quarter-by-quarter analysis:

First quarter

– The broadcast mentioned that Jerick McKinnon is expected to take the majority of the snaps today, meaning we might not see as many snaps for Matt Asiata.

– Anthony Barr and Eric Kendricks both injured on the same play, which immediately costs the Vikings. Emmanuel Lamur goes in and Kirk Cousins goes right at him, tossing a TD to Jamison Crowder.

– Vikings start moving the ball, but the downside of throwing all short passes is that if a screen doesn’t work, you end up stuck in third-and-long. Bradford takes a sack, ending the drive. The Vikings kept in a tight end and running back to block and still couldn’t protect Bradford.

– Both Barr and Kendricks back in the game, which the Vikings will really need to stop the underneath game….and now Kendricks leaving the game again, he is doubtful. Vikings will have to rely on nickel coverage.

– Trae Waynes has things to learn still about playing receivers off the line of scrimmage. Last week he was too far off the line in a key situation, today he gives up a clean break off the line for Pierre Garçon, who got easily open over the middle for a reception.
