Vikings draft middle linebacker Kentrell Brothers in fifth round

By Andrew Krammer

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — The Vikings added a middle linebacker to the competition.

Former Missouri linebacker Kentrell Brothers was taken in the fifth round (160th overall) by the Vikings on Saturday. Brothers (6-0, 245) led college football in tackles per game with just under 13 and is an ideal fit for middle linebacker in the Vikings’ 4-3 scheme, according to college director of scouting Jamaal Stephenson.

Adding Brothers gives the Vikings some depth in the middle, joining Eric Kendricks and Audie Cole. Coach Mike Zimmer has kept the option open for Kendricks, the 2015 second-round pick, to move to weak-side linebacker after he started 11 games in the middle as a rookie. Brothers is the third new linebacker in the Vikings’ position room, joining ex-Bengal Emmanuel Lamur and ex-Lion Travis Lewis.

Brothers was credited with 12 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks, two interceptions and three blocked kicks as a senior in 2015.
