Vikings receivers take to Teddy Bridgewater’s workouts, hope they build growth

By Andrew Krammer

MINNEAPOLIS — Cordarrelle Patterson and Stefon Diggs were among two newcomers this month to Teddy Bridgewater’s now-annual offseason workouts in his home state of Florida.

The group is growing after Bridgewater assembled the informal workouts last offseason. Teammates say he’s the brains of the operation that was dubbed ‘Teddy Two Gloves Passing Academy’ on Patterson’s Instagram account. And while the Vikings have made a concerted effort this offseason to improve the pieces around him, the quarterback and receivers are trying to pull their weight to awake one of the league’s dormant passing attacks.

Diggs, the Vikings’ leading receiver as a rookie, said Bridgewater’s throwing sessions are a step in the right direction.

“We just need to put more time together,” Diggs said Sunday night at the Minnesota Football Honors ceremony. “Last year was our first year together as a group. This was Teddy’s second year, he’ll have another year under his belt. And he’s getting a lot of experience and I’m getting the same. Coming into my second year, my main thing is show growth. Show that I can be consistent and play at a high level all the time.”

As Norv Turner and the Vikings’ offensive minds formulate a new approach, they’re also looking for more confident and comfortable quarterback play. Adrian Peterson’s presence dictated much of the offense, and head coach Mike Zimmer said he wants a more balanced attack and a more assertive quarterback.

And though Zimmer recently offered a bit of caution when asked about players conducting their own offseason workouts, he’ll likely enjoy hearing about his quarterback showing leadership. Diggs and receiver Adam Thielen credited Bridgewater for corralling many Vikings at a time when players often want to squeeze in vacations. They were also joined by tight ends Kyle Rudolph and MyCole Pruitt as well as receivers Jarius Wright, Charles Johnson and Terrell Sinkfield earlier this month at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla., just a few hours north of Bridgewater’s hometown in Miami.

“Everything went smooth,” Diggs said. “This was the first time everybody got together as a group. Everybody getting in a little earlier than usual. Spending that quality time with your guys is going to pay off in the long run.”

Johnson said some guys took time to learn from performance coach Tom Shaw. But to stay as a group, they had to turn down Jon Gruden’s popular QB camp, which was taking place at the opposite end of the field in Orlando and needed receivers for quarterback prospects Connor Cook and Paxton Lynch.

They opted for the ‘Two Gloves’ academy instead.

“[Bridgewater] had a structure,” Thielen said. “He led us through everything. It was all orchestrated by him. We didn’t have to do much as far as planning. It’s nice to have a leader like that.”

And they plan on getting together again before players report to training camp in late July. Perhaps they’ll have another addition as the Vikings may select a receiver in next week’s NFL Draft.

“I’m going to Miami when we get another break,” Diggs said. “So I’ll be there a lot. I’ll see ‘5′ a lot.”
