Brett Favre among 15 finalists for Hall of Fame

By Andrew Krammer

Former Packers, Jets and Vikings quarterback Brett Favre took another step toward the Hall of Fame.

Favre is among 15 modern-era finalists announced this week, joining Terrell Owens and Alan Faneca as the three first-year candidates to make the cut to the final round. The 2016 Hall of Fame class will be announced the day before the Super Bowl, on Feb. 6. No more than eight inductees will be permitted into the Hall, with inductions coming in August.

The other finalists include Edgerrin James, John Lynch, Morten Andersen, Steve Atwater, Orlando Pace, Tony Dungy, Marvin Harrison, Joe Jacoby, Kurt Warner, Don Coryell and Terrell Davis. Two senior finalists, meaning their careers ended more than 25 years ago, are Ken Stabler and Dick Stanfel. One contributor finalist will be considered in Edward DeBartolo Jr., the San Francisco 49ers owner presiding over their five Super Bowl championships.

Favre, a three-time league MVP, ended his storybook career in 2010 with the Vikings, walking away as the leader in many all-time NFL passing categories. He led the Green Bay Packers to 11 postseason appearances in 16 seasons, including consecutive Super Bowl berths and one Super Bowl championship. A split with the Packers in 2007 ultimately led Favre to Minnesota, where he took the Vikings to the NFC Championship game with one of his best seasons in 2009.

Adrian Peterson was recently asked which Vikings’ playoff team — 2009 or 2012 — better reflects their current roster heading into Sunday’s wild-card game against Seattle.

“’09,” Peterson said. “Of course, Teddy’s not a Hall of Fame quarterback, but he’s definitely getting the job done. Each week he continues to get better. I’d say as far as the receivers, we have a lot of athletes offensively and they’re able to make plays. And our defense is as good as it has been here in Minnesota.”
