Vikings promote B.J. DuBose to active roster, place Rhett Ellison on injured reserve

By Derek Wetmore

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. – The Vikings have elevated rookie defensive end B.J. DuBose from the practice squad to the active roster in time for the playoffs.

With the freed up spot on the practice squad, the Vikings have also signed defensive tackle Toby Johnson, a rookie out of Georgia, to the practice squad.

The space on the 53-man roster was cleared by placing Rhett Ellison on injured reserve. Ellison, a valuable blocking tight end, required season-ending surgery for a torn patellar tendon, which will take six months to heal, according to head coach Mike Zimmer.

The Vikings drafted DuBose in the 6th round of the 2015 draft, and he spent the regular season on the practice squad. He played his college ball at Louisville, where he signed out of high school as part of the same recruiting class as Teddy Bridgewater, according to the Vikings.

Promoting a defensive lineman might raise an eyebrow or two, given Linval Joseph’s uncertain health status for Sunday’s game. Joseph is dealing with a foot/toe injury that has kept him out of four of Minnesota’s past five games, although he was at practice Wednesday.

Johnson, meanwhile, joins the Vikings practice squad after he spent time on the Chicago Bears’ practice squad. Johnson, a rookie, originally signed with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent and then bounced to the practice squad of the Jacksonville Jaguars before winding up in Chicago and now Minnesota.
