Stuck on Vikings’ bench, WR Charles Johnson says ‘I’m all about winning games’

By Derek Wetmore

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Anyone seen Charles Johnson lately?

After a breakout season with the Vikings a year ago, the wide receiver has seen his role drastically reduced this season, at first because of an injury, but lately he appears to be on the wrong end of a numbers crunch at the position.

“Yeah, it’s surprising but hey, I’m all about winning games,” Johnson said after Sunday’s NFC North-clinching win.

“I’m still working, I’m still grinding. I don’t really know what’s going on,” Johnson admitted. “I’m here, supporting my teammates, doing what I can do. It’s just, I don’t know, circumstances. I got hurt, lost my job. It was kind of unfortunate that it happened that way, but I guess that’s how the business goes when you get hurt.”

Johnson dealt with a rib injury early in the season, which led to the Vikings turning to rookie Stefon Diggs in Week 4 against the Broncos. Diggs caught six of the 10 passes thrown his way in that game, and has been a nice surprise for the Vikings offense this year with 52 catches in 13 games.

Diggs’ performance, as well as the presense of Mike Wallace, has left Johnson on the sidelines, including being a healthy scratch each of the past three games. The other three healthy Vikings receivers — Jarius Wright, Adam Thielen and Cordarrelle Patterson — have slightly different roles than what Johnson added a year ago.

“Initially, when I got hurt, and [Diggs] came in, he was ballin’ and I was like, ‘OK, I mean, I understand that.’ But when I got back [I thought I was] going to get back in there. I did good, I was good during training camp, and when the ball came my way the two or three games I made the catches. I wasn’t dropping balls or nothing, so it’s kind of just circumstances.”

“He [Diggs] balled out, Mike [Wallace] was ballin’, and hey, we’ve got two guys ballin’, I’m over here [on the bench] and we’re winning so it’s fine.”

Wallace made a critical catch late in the Vikings’ win against the Bears at Soldier Field, but he’s otherwise been very quiet this season. He caught 31 passes in 12 games last year. This season, however, he’s dressed for 11 games and has just nine catches to his name.

As he’s twisted in the wind, Johnson says he’s had a couple talks about his role with the Vikings’ coaching staff, “but at the end of the day I’m here to win games.”

“I feel like I’m on a championship team but I’m just on the ship – I’m not fueling it, I’m not doing anything to keep it going,” Johnson told his coaches.

“So would you rather want me [to be] a guy who’s content to sit on the bench or a guy who’s eager to get out there and wanting to be out there?”

“I wish I could do a little more, but I’d rather [sit and] win than be out there and lose,” Johnson said.
