Blair Walsh named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week

By Andrew Krammer

Blair Walsh’s fourth NFL season has come full circle.

On Wednesday, Walsh was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week following his five field goals, two from 50-plus, against the New York Giants on Sunday night. It’s Walsh’s fifth career special teams player of the week award, a Vikings franchise record.

Walsh, 25, started the season with a four-year contract extension during training camp, and shortly after hit the skids by missing more field goals (6) than he made (5) in the preseason. He started the regular season 6 for 8, including a miss in the Vikings’ 23-20 loss at Denver. During the team’s bye the following week, general manager Rick Spielman fielded questions about bringing in competition for his recently-extended kicker.

The Vikings stood by Walsh, and the continued trust has paid off.

Since that miss in Denver, Walsh has converted nearly 90 percent of his field goals (26 of 29), including the five against New York that earned him this week’s honor. Walsh did miss his fourth extra point of the season on Sunday night.
