Vikings clinch a playoff berth with decisive win over Giants

By Andrew Krammer

MINNEAPOLIS — With a 49-17 win, the Vikings are locked into the 2015 playoffs.

A decisive victory over the New York Giants on Sunday night carves out a spot for the Vikings in this year’s postseason, guaranteeing they’ll at least be a NFC wild-card team next month. The season finale at Lambeau Field next week will decide the NFC North winner between the Vikings (10-5) and Green Bay Packers (10-5). The game, originally scheduled for 12 p.m. CST kickoff, has been ‘flexed’ to the nationally-televised Sunday night broadcast.

It’s the Vikings’ first playoff berth in the second season under coach Mike Zimmer, and the franchise’s first postseason appearance since 2012.

They have a few scenarios open. Seattle’s loss to St. Louis on Sunday afternoon means the Vikings can still be either the 3, 5 or 6-seed in the NFC playoffs. A win vs. Green Bay next week makes them the 3-seed, hosting Seattle at TCF Bank Stadium in the first round.

A loss at Lambeau means the Vikings would be either the 5-seed or 6-seed, depending on Seattle’s result vs. Arizona. In Week 17, a Vikings loss and Seattle win sends Minnesota back to Green Bay in the first round. A Vikings loss and Seattle loss next week sends Minnesota to Washington.
