Vikings GM Spielman: No decisions made on quarterbacks

By Matthew Coller

INDIANAPOLIS – One of the goals of the Minnesota Vikings’ organization at the NFL Combine is to meet with the agents for Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Bradford and Case Keenum. All three Vikings quarterbacks are set to become unrestricted free agents on March 14, leaving the team in limbo at their most important position.

Speaking with the Twin Cities media on Wednesday at the Combine, GM Rick Spielman said the team has not made any final calls on the three QBs.

“Right now we are in the process of all three quarterbacks,” Spielman said. “[The Combine] gives our organization an opportunity to sit down with all three of the quarterbacks’ representatives. I think we are in a very unique situation because of the in-depth knowledge we have on all three. Also the practical game knowledge that we have because all three have played for us. There has been no decisions made, unlike what’s been reported.”

Reports have indicated that the Vikings will not use the franchise tag on Keenum.

There has also been news that Bridgewater’s contract will not toll to 2018.

“We’ve been in direct contact with the league, the league will make the final decision on the tolling…to my knowledge, I don’t think the contract will toll but the league will finalize that and have an announcement in the near future,” Spielman said.

On assessing Bridgewater’s recovery from a severe knee injury that kept him out for over a year, Spielman said:

“Our medical people had their hands on him every day, we have seen his progress. You guys haven’t seen it but we have.”

The Vikings’ GM added the team has great appreciation for Bridgewater.

“One thing I would say is that Teddy has been such a great teammate and is a great person and has been great for our organization. Any time our organization can reach out and help a player, even though it may not benefit us, we are always going to look out for the best interest of our players.”

Spielman did not rule out anything to resolve the QB situation, including selecting one in a strong rookie class. But he reiterated that the team will need to get together with the players’ reps first before moving forward.

“Speaking with the agents…you can get more clarity on the direction you can potentially go,” Spielman said.
