Report: Talk of Jets’ crazy Cousins offers is overblown

By Matthew Coller

Is it March 14th yet?

The closer we get to the opening of NFL free agency, the more wild the rumors have become about where free agent quarterbacks will land and how much they could get paid. At the top of that list is Washington free agent QB Kirk Cousins.

Last week, ESPN reported the New York Jets were going into free agency with Cousins as their No. 1 target and were willing to land him by any means. On Tuesday, a report came out that the Jets could give Cousins $60 million guaranteed in the first year.

On Thursday, the New York Daily News threw some cold water on reports of the Jets going bananas to land Cousins.

“First and foremost, the Jets absolutely would love to sign Cousins in the coming weeks, according to team sources,” Jets beat reporter Manish Mehta wrote. “He’s a win-now AND win-later quarterback entering the prime of his career. There’s a large enough window (at least five seasons) to win with the soon-to-be 30-year-old signal caller to make it more than worthwhile to make a strong investment in him, but let’s be clear: The Jets are not going to try to bring him aboard by any means necessary.”

Mehta believes the Jets will offer Cousins a contract similar to that of Matthew Stafford, who signed a $135 million deal before last season.

If you only read the speculation, you might think that half the league was interested in Cousins, but Mehta reports that the Jets do not see it that way.

“Gang Green believes that there will be about three other strong suitors,” Mehta wrote. “On the surface, the Broncos, Browns, Vikings, Cardinals and Bills have their own quarterback dilemmas, but will they all be serious bidders for Cousins’ services? The Jets don’t think so. Some of those teams will address their signal caller needs in the draft.”

The Vikings could be a top contender for Cousins. They offer a chance for him to compete for the Super Bowl this year and play with one of the league’s best supporting casts on offense. GM Rick Spielman said during Super Bowl week that the team has prepared its cap for every situation – which would presumably include handing out a mega deal to a quarterback.

“The Jets want Cousins,” Mehta wrote. “They’ll make a strong, fair proposal and plan accordingly if he goes elsewhere.”
