Report: Jets are willing to break the bank for Kirk Cousins

By Matthew Coller

As the Minnesota Vikings consider which direction to take at the quarterback position, one factor is likely to be the price tag that it would take the land Washington free agent Kirk Cousins. According to ESPN reporter Rich Cimini, the New York Jets are willing to pay “whatever it takes” to land Cousins.

“The Jets want him badly,” Cimini wrote of Cousins.

The Vikings have been connected to the former Michigan State QB through speculation, but there have been no definitive reports that Minnesota will chase him. Cousins and the Vikings are a natural fit because of the team’s success last season and strong supporting cast.

During Super Bowl week, Cousins said his No. 1 priority is finding a place where he can win. However, ProFootball Talk hinted at the possibility of the Jets fully guaranteeing Cousins’ deal, which is unheard of in the NFL.

“Money aside, the Jets hope to convince him he’ll have a chance to win in New York,” Cimini wrote.

It’s clear the price to play poker is going to be very high. Even if Cousins landed a deal similar to Matthew Stafford’s, that would still put his cap hit in the $30 million range.

The Vikings are set up well with the cap. They have somewhere in the range of $60 million in space this season and would likely be able to sign 2019 free agents Stefon Diggs, Danielle Hunter, Anthony Barr and Eric Kendricks to long-term deals even if they spent big on a QB.

“Regardless of who the quarterback is, we have planned for this two years back,” GM Rick Spielman said during Super Bowl Week. “We don’t just start planning for this year on our cap. There is a process in place, like everything we do, that’s done very thoroughly and it is also looking out into the future. Knowing, as these players develop and knowing as those players become good players that you don’t want to lose, we’re targeting guys – OK, two years from now we’re probably going to have to pay this guy. So as we cap plan, I never want to get into the mode of all in this year because I don’t want to start back over again. It’s always looking, not only to put the best team on the field this year, but also can we keep these players for year after year after year.”
