Report: QB AJ McCarron becomes an unrestricted free agent

By Matthew Coller

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback AJ McCarron entered the offseason unsure whether he would be an unrestricted free agent or a restricted free agent. On Thursday, he got the answer he wanted, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

And now the available QBs for this off-season has grown by one. AJ McCarron is free.

McCarron argued that he should be considered unrestricted despite not having accrued four seasons in the NFL. During his rookie year, the former Alabama QB sat out the first 13 weeks on the Non-Football Injury list. The league apparently ruled that his rookie year did count, thus allowing him to hit the market.

While it’s doubtful any team will make him their starter right away, McCarron should have a lot of interest around the league. In 2015, he filled in for Andy Dalton in three regular season games and one playoff game. He went 2-1 with a 97.1 rating in the regular season, but lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the playoffs while throwing for 212 yards with one touchdown, one interception.

If the Vikings elect to bring back only Case Keenum or Teddy Bridgewater instead of both, they will need a strong backup option. McCarron’s name would be toward the top of the list along with New York’s Josh McCown and Miami’s Matt Moore.

Also notable is the timing of the league’s ruling. Does this indicate that we will have a decision on whether Teddy Bridgewater’s contract will toll?
