RB Latavius Murray describes Vikings’ new OC as ‘very positive’

By Matthew Coller

There aren’t many players on the current Minnesota Vikings roster that have experience with new offensive coordinator John DiFilippo at any of his stops in Oakland, Cleveland or Philadelphia, so the Vikings’ offensive players will be asking running back Latavius Murray for the scoop on their new OC.

Murray and DiFilippo were both part of the 2013 and 2014 Oakland Raiders. The Vikings’ new OC was the quarterbacks coach, so Murray didn’t work directly with him, but Minnesota’s running back did see his efforts in red zone strategy.

” Flip’s situation was that he handled red zone … so when different coaches give their presentations, you remember his being a little more energetic,” Murray said per a team release. “You remember his being a little more upbeat and getting guys going and excited about the game plan we had going in that week.”

Murray noted that Raiders franchise quarterback Derek Carr worked well with DeFilippo and players appreciated his upbeat attitude.

“I remember his energy was great,” Murray said, “Positive, very positive, liked to have fun. He was passionate. I knew Derek (Carr) liked him, that’s for sure. I know everybody liked Flip. I’ve never heard anything bad about him or anybody who felt different, to be honest with you.”

DeFilippo and Murray talked on the field before the Eagles’ win over the Vikings in the NFC Championship game.

“I’m the only player that has crossed paths with him, and I definitely think that’s rare, so I’m happy I am a familiar face to him,” Murray said “And then just the fact that we spoke here a few weeks ago (during pregame of the NFC Championship game) and now he’s the OC, we were giving each other some praises just on where we came from and how long it’s been since we’ve been together out in Oakland. I think he’s definitely going to be excited about his opportunity and he’s going to do everything he can to give everybody else success because I know that’s the only thing he cares about — making us better.”

One of the good problems to have for DiFilippo will be finding the proper role for Murray as Dalvin Cook returns from an ACL injury. The Eagles used a three-man backfield of Jay Ajayi, LeGarrette Blount and Corey Clement.
