Bleacher Report – Vikings

Ryan Tannehill highlights OverTheCap’s list of QBs who could be released

By Matthew Coller

Over the next two months, the Minnesota Vikings will look at every possible option at quarterback, from signing Kirk Cousins to franchise tagging Case Keenum to re-signing Teddy Bridgewater. They will also be looking at less expected options – quarterbacks who could be released by their teams as they move on with high draft picks, trades or free agent signings.

OverTheCap.com listed five quarterbacks who could be cut by their teams based on their contract and performance – several of which could be in consideration for the Vikings’ starting job. (OTC analyzes contracts across the league. Founder Jason Fitzgerald also co-authored a book on the salary cap called Crunching Numbers.)

Tannehill might be the most interesting to the Vikings. Fitzgerald wrote:

“With two knee injuries in two years I do not believe it’s a given that the Dolphins can roll with Tannehill at least on his current contract. This contract never really was about the Dolphins belief in Tannehill and was more about trying to get him on a lower cost contract if he took the step towards being a franchise QB, which he hasn’t done. The Dolphins wont have a need to move him early and can wait to see if they can find someone in free agency or the draft or they can even look to rework the deal with some incentives based on health. I think the odds would be in favor of him sticking with the Dolphins but I’d be surprised if the contract remains as is.”

In 77 career starts, Tannehill is 37-40 with 106 touchdowns, 66 interceptions and an 86.5 quarterback rating. He missed the entire 2017 season, which could be concerning to any team interested, but his 2016 season was the best of his career. He went 8-5 with career highs in completion percentage (67.5 percent), yards per attempt (7.7) and rating (93.5). Pro Football Focus has rated Tannehill above an 80 grade every year of his career and as high as 85.1. For context, 17 quarterbacks rated above 80 this year 10 QBs were above 85.

Taylor might also catch the Vikings’ eye. Fitzgerald points out that Taylor’s contract will force the Buffalo Bills to decide whether they are keeping, cutting or trading their starting quarterback.

“Taylor has a big roster bonus due early in the offseason so a decision will come quick here,” he wrote. “They will get an added $1 million in cash and cap relief after the year if they cut him.”

Since winning the starting job in 2015, Taylor is 22-20 with 51 touchdowns, 16 interceptions and a 92.5 rating. However, in the last two years, he has averaged under 7.0 yards per attempt and been sacked 88 times.

Glennon could draw interest around the league as a backup. It wouldn’t appear the Vikings would consider Manning or Bortles, but weirder things have happened to the Vikings at the QB position.
