Bleacher Report – Vikings

Vikings’ next offensive coordinator will play a role on QB decision

By Matthew Coller

As the Minnesota Vikings hunt for their next offensive coordinator and quarterback this offseason, they will have a clear order of operations. First, the OC, then the QB.

On Thursday, Vikings GM Rick Spielman talked with the Twin Cities media about both key decisions. He said the soon-to-be-hired offensive coordinator will be involved in deciding who is under center to start 2018.

“He’ll have a major part of the decision-making process,” Spielman said. “He’ll be heavily involved in that. But the way that we structure everything is that everyone has a part of that process in the decision, and myself, coach Zimmer, our scouting department and all of our coaches. Anytime we’re making major decisions, we have a systematic approach that I feel is very thorough to get through so that you can make the best decisions possible and this will be no different, whoever comes in.”

The Vikings plan to wrap up interviews next week and have an OC decision shortly after.

Teddy Bridgewater will be a part of the QB conversation, along with fellow Vikings free agent quarterbacks Case Keenum and Sam Bradford. Spielman was unclear on how the team feels about Bridgewater’s long-term outlook following his recovery from a severe knee injury suffered in August 2016.

“I think he’s worked extremely hard, he’s been an inspiration, just to see him out there practicing every day,” Spielman said. “You see him getting more and more comfortable. So, again, until we speak to our medical staff and his doctor and our doctors, we’ll make that determination.”

On the potential of tolling Bridgewater’s control, Spielman said the issue will be in the hands of the NFL and the NFL Players Association.

“Right now, he’s technically ready to become a free agent,” Spielman said. “With the tolling, I know you guys wrote about all that, if it goes into that area, it’s not a Minnesota Viking (decision), that an NFL and player union that will have to decide that area.”
