Bleacher Report – Vikings

Adam Thielen didn’t hide from the Kirk Cousins chatter this week

By Derek Wetmore

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — If you live for non-controversial quotes from athletes, you wouldn’t want to miss the regular press interviews conducted by Case Keenum, Teddy Bridgewater and Adam Thielen.

That’s one reason this week’s Thielen statement was so surprising.

With the Vikings franchise in the midst of trying to answer the most important question a team can ask — who’s the quarterback? — the star wide receiver threw an interesting name into the ring.

Thielen was a guest on NFL Network this week, and a fan in the audience asked him the main question on the mind of Vikings fans right now: Who do you think’s going to be the starting QB for the Vikings next year?

Thielen was ready for it, and he even quipped that Minnesota’s coaches would be listening closely to his answer. “Zim is like really looking down on me right now,” Thielen said, probably only half-joking.

“Honestly, it was kind of a good problem to have this year. Most teams are looking for one guy and we had three guys this year. And three guys that I have a ton of confidence in and guys that don’t get enough credit — guys that are winners and I think all of them can play at a high level. So it’s going to be interesting to see what they’re going to do,” he said, in reference to Vikings’ management.

If the star receiver from Detroit Lakes had stopped there, we’d all just move along. That’s a vanilla-flavored quote that you expect coming out of a league that doesn’t seem to embrace rocking the boat. Except he didn’t stop there. Before one of the moderators could jump back in, Thielen continued:

“But there’s another guy out there now: Kirk Cousins. So you see that, you never know. If we can’t get one of those three that we already have to stay around then Kirk Cousins is out there and he’s a heck of a football player,” Thielen said.

He didn’t physically drop his mic after that, but he may as well have.

Moderator Michael Irvin jumped in and celebrated Thielen for saying a lot of words while saying “a whole lot of nothing.”

He must not have been listening. A Vikings wide receiver, coming off a loss in the NFC Championship game and leading up to the Super Bowl in Minneapolis just connected his team with the soon-to-be-rich Kirk Cousins. To me, that’s a whole lot of something.

Who knows what will play out with Case Keenum, Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Bradford, all free agents this offseason. And for that matter, it’s anyone’s guess what will happen with Cousins.

For what it’s worth, here are the odds, according to Bovada, of the former Washington QB’s next team. You’ll notice one conspicuous omission on the list, if you root for the purple and gold.

Denver Broncos — 3/2
New York Jets — 2/1
Arizona Cardinals — 4/1
Cleveland Browns — 4/1
Buffalo Bills — 9/1
Jacksonville Jaguars — 14/1
New York Giants — 14/1
Miami Dolphins — 20/1

Should the Vikings offer Kirk Cousins a long-term contract?
