Tom Brady gushes about his memories in Minnesota, will try to win his 3rd in a new local stadium

By Derek Wetmore

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — Even Tom Brady says that Super Bowl Tickets are tough to come by in Minnesota.

On Wednesday the legendary Patriots quarterback, who has family that lives in the area, gushed about his childhood memories of visiting Minnesota.

“It’s very special. Every time I’ve been back to Minnesota I’ve had such great support from my family,” Brady said. “We’ve played here 2006 we played here; we played in University of Minnesota’s stadium the next time we played here; and then obviously this one in U.S. Bank Stadium.”

“This one,” as Brady refers to his lateset Super Bowl appearance, will be the highest stakes. It will be in the nicest of the 3 venues. And presumably New England’s superstar quarterback will have some family tickets to hand out.

Brady has family that lives in Browerville, Minn., a small town in central Minnesota with a population of about 750, according to the latest census. It’s about halfway between Alexandria and Brainerd, on highway 71. And Brady couldn’t say enough good things about it when he took the main stage Wednesday.

“I’ve come here my entire life, since I was a baby I’ve come to Minnesota,” Brady said. “Summers and winters and I’ve loved the experience, I love the life here. Some of the great memories I had as a kid were coming here and milking cows with my grandpa and hanging out in his silos and up in the haystack above his barn and going out to where he would pasteurize the milk and cull a lot of the cream off the top of the milk in the morning. Shooting his .22 at targets in his backyard, and catching sunfish with my uncles. So it was great. I love being here. It’s a great state. Obviously I love the people. Being that my mom’s here, it was just a special.”

So now Brady, easily the greatest quarterback among those remaining this year, will hope to make it a clean 3-for-3 in winning his debut game in Minnesota stadiums.

That first game he mentioned in 2006 at the Metrodome seems like it was a dozen years ago. A much younger Brady completed 27 of his 43 passes for 372 yards (8.65 yards per attempt) and was good for 4 touchdowns and a pick. Brady’s Pats cruised to a 31-7 win over the Vikings, led by Brad Johnson and Brooks Bollinger, about six months before Minnesota drafted Adrian Peterson.

The Vikings made it a little bit closer the next time around. Brady beat them 30-7 at TCF Bank Stadium, the game in which Minnesota’s Matt Cassell threw 4 interceptions. Brady managed his way to 149 yards and one touchdown (7.1 YPA) and still won comfortably in the temporary home the Vikings borrowed from the Gophers.

“It was much easier to get tickets to those previous 2 games than it is for this particular game,” Brady joked. “These tickets are pretty tough to come by, but I’m trying to best I can to accomodate everybody.”
