Zimmer on Rodgers’ status: ‘It’s not up to me’

By Matthew Coller

Mike Zimmer poked fun at his own quarterback espionage on Monday when discussing the likelihood of Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers starting on Saturday when the Vikings face Green Bay at Lambeau Field.

“It’s not different than anything other week where you don’t know what’s going on,” Zimmer said. “You guys wonder why I never say who the quarterback is, see.”

Well, we know Zimmer’s quarterback is Case Keenum, but Rodgers may sit the final two games if the Packers are eliminated from the playoffs. He also might decide to play with hopes of beating the Vikings and hurting their chances at a first-round bye in the playoffs.

Asked how much different the team’s preparation is between a start from backup Brett Hundley or Rodgers, Zimmer said:

“They’re still doing a lot of the same things. I’ve only watched three games on them before I came down here. Some of the stuff is still the same and then there is some other things. I’m not going to get into the differences into those things. I mean Aaron Rodgers is an unbelievable great player, right? If somebody goes in he’s hard to replace, but they have a lot of similarities – rather than how great Rodgers is.”

Zimmer has made life difficult at times for the Packers. When Rodgers went down earlier this season on a hit from linebacker Anthony Barr, Hundley was picked off three times by the Vikings. Since 2015, Rodgers has only had one game with a rating over 100 against Zimmer – and that was Week 16 last season.

If Rodgers does play, he could offer the Vikings one final tuneup before matching up with the NFC’s best QBs in the postseason. If he doesn’t the Vikings have a more clear path to the No. 1 or No. 2 seed.

Any head coach would rather increase his chances to win, but Zimmer is putting Rodgers’ status under the control-what-you-can-control category.

“It’s not up to me,” Zimmer said. “We just play whoever comes out, it doesn’t matter to me who plays.”
