Bleacher Report – Vikings

Vikings planned for Rudolph to sit, but Vikings’ TE pushed to play vs. Bengals

By Matthew Coller

On Friday, it appeared there was no chance that tight end Kyle Rudolph would be on the field when the Minnesota Vikings faced off with the Cincinnati Bengals at US Bank Stadium on Sunday.

But Rudolph asked trainer Eric Sugarman not to rule him out in case his injured ankle healed over the next 48 hours.

It did – enough for Rudolph to play a blocking role on Latavius Murray’s rushing touchdown and to catch his own touchdown in the second half.

“It’s important to me,” Rudolph said. “I know we had an opportunity to win the NFC North today. I just asked [Sugarman] to give me a chance. Wasn’t a great chance, but the guys here on our training staff, our doctors, they did a great job. I wanted to be out there with those guys and did everything I could to get out there.”

In fact, his ankle felt good enough to do the Ickey Shuffle, a touchdown dance made famous by former Bengals running back Ickey Woods in the late-80s and early 90s.

“I felt bad doing it at that point in the game, but as a kid that grew up in Cincinnati, I had to do it,” Rudolph said.

Rudolph was injured the last time the Vikings played the Bengals in the regular season.

Before the game, news broke that Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis is set to walk away from the team. Rudolph gave credit to Lewis for changing the trajectory of the franchise.

“That organization was not any good before he got there,” Rudolph said. “And he got them to a place where, arguably if Carson [Palmer] doesn’t get hurt in that playoff game against the Steelers in ‘05, they got a chance to do some damage to do in the playoffs…when I grew up, I couldn’t watch the Bengals because they were blacked out and I think they’ve sold out just about every game since.”
