NFL suspends Vikings’ Andrew Sendejo for hit on Mike Wallace

By Matthew Coller

Minnesota Vikings safety Andrew Sendejo has been suspended by the NFL for a hit on receiver Mike Wallace early in Sunday’s win over the Baltimore Ravens.

In a letter from the league, Vice President of Football Operations Jon Runyan said that the hit could have been avoided and was “violently directed at the head and neck area and unreasonably placed both [Sendejo] and the opposing player at risk of serious injury.”

You can bet that the suspension will be appealed based on Mike Zimmer’s comments Monday. The Vikings’ head coach didn’t believe the play should have even been a penalty.

“I think the receiver took five steps after he caught the ball. I think he hit him with a glancing blow,” Zimmer said. “I know what [the officials] told me, but I’m going to turn it in to the League and see what they say. He established position as a runner, took two extra steps. Xavier [Rhodes] was trying to pull the ball out, which he ended up doing. The guy went down a little bit. But in my opinion, he was a runner.”

Anthony Harris will likely fill in for Sendejo if the suspension is upheld. He played in Sendejo’s place when the Vikings’ starter was injured against the Green Bay Packers.
