Vikings won’t pick up Adrian Peterson’s 2017 option, making him a free agent

By Matthew Coller

Adrian Peterson is officially on the market.

The Minnesota Vikings announced Tuesday that they do not plan to pick up Peterson’s option, which makes him a free agent when the new league year begins on March 9.

“Adrian is an important part of the Minnesota Vikings organization,” general manager Rick Spielman said per release. “We will continue to have conversations with his representatives and leave our future options open while determining what is best for both parties moving forward.”

In a meeting with Twin Cities media last week, Spielman said that no matter what happens, he feels Peterson will, “always be a Viking.” He also acknowledged that this year’s NFL draft is stocked with running backs. Spielman called it the deepest he’d ever seen.

At his end-of-year press conference, Peterson expressed his desire to stay in Minnesota.

“I’m going into this thinking about my guys and wanting to be back with my guys and realizing at the end of the day it is a business,” Peterson said. “I always let the chips fall where they may. I would love to finish my career here, try to help bring a Super Bowl to Minnesota.”

However, the future Hall of Fame running back recently appeared on ESPN and name-dropped several possible suitors – including the Bucs and Giants – if the Vikings decide not to work out a new contract.
