Report: Vikings interested in recently-released left tackle

By Matthew Coller

Here’s a stunner: The Minnesota Vikings are in on a free agent left tackle.

CBS’s Jason La Confora reports that the Vikings have inquired about recently-released left tackle Russell Okung, who has spent last year with the Denver Broncos.

No shortage of teams inquiring about Russell Okung, including the Giants, Jets, Chargers and Vikings

Okung signed a very unique deal in Denver last season that was worth $53 million over five years, but included zero guaranteed dollars. That allowed the Broncos to release him without penalty.

The former Pro Bowler was not as dominating as during his best years with the Seattle Seahawks, but he still ranked 38th by Pro Football Focus metrics and 21st in run blocking. There may be some concern about the miles on his body and his remaining flexibility, but a review of his last two games – one against Kansas City and pass rusher Tamba Hali and the other against Oakland’s masterful edge rusher Khalil Mack revealed that Okung can still hold his own.

How much might he cost? The current market includes only a handful of sought-after tackles and many teams who are looking, which means that Okung won’t come cheap. It would be favorable for the Vikings to sign him to a front-loaded deal to have him act as a stopgap until they can find their future left tackle.
