Bleacher Report – Vikings

Free agent guard TJ Lang hasn’t heard from Packers, is prepared to hit the market

By Matthew Coller

To paraphrase Bart Simpson’s friend Milhouse Van Houten: Everything’s coming up Vikings in the offensive line market.

In an interview with XM Radio, Green Bay Packers’ guard TJ Lang, who was ranked the eighth best at his position this year by Pro Football Focus, said the team has not talked to him about returning and he is getting ready to hit free agency.

Here are his comments via Aaron Nagler of USA Today Network-Wisconsin:

“The closer it gets, the more prepared I am to go out and see what’s out there. A part of me, too, stresses a little bit just … the unknown sitting here thinking maybe there will be five, six, seven teams that come after me and then maybe there’s only one team. Maybe there’s not any teams. Are teams going to be turned away because I had the hip surgery even though it’s a pretty common procedure around the NFL?

But I’m just excited to see what’s going to happen. If Green Bay calls and we can get something done, that would be awesome. But if not, I’m sitting in a good spot here, too, coming off a pretty solid year and making my first Pro Bowl, which was a great honor. It’s been so long since I was in this position to choose who I want to play for, since college when I picked Eastern Michigan.”

On Friday, the Vikings released guard starting Brandon Fusco, which saved $3.2 million on the salary cap, putting Minnesota around $23 million in cap space. If they release Adrian Peterson, that number jumps up to almost $40 million.

How much might Lang cost? The top two right guards in the NFL, Pittsburgh’s David DeCastro and Chicago’s Kyle Long, are each making an average annual salary of $10 million through 2022. DeCastro received $16 million in guaranteed money in his extension, Long got $18 million.

Green Bay’s 29-year-old guard is coming off an extension worth $26.3 million that he signed in 2012.
