Report: Ravens may let top free agent tackle Wagner hit the market

By Matthew Coller

The list of Unrestricted Free Agents in the NFL always looks more attractive before teams start working out extensions for their UFAs, but this year it appears many of the big names will land on the open market. The Baltimore Sun is reporting that the Ravens are prepared to walk away from star right tackle Rick Wagner.

The Sun wrote:

“In a perfect world with no salary cap restraints, the Ravens would re-sign [Rick Wagner]. However, there seems to be a confidence level among team officials that they’ll be able to find a serviceable and cheaper replacement for Wagner if he bolts, while it would be much harder to find a nose tackle of [Brandon] Williams’ ilk.”

A former first-round pick, Wagner was rated as the 18th best tackle in the NFL this year by Pro Football Focus.

Desperate to improve their offensive line, the Vikings would very likely be a top bidder for Wagner’s services, despite the possible price tag. NFL.com’s Greg Rosenthal wrote that he could be seeking at least $10 million per year.

Minnesota would be able to foot the bill for the 27-year-old tackle considering their current cap situation. After releasing Brandon Fusco on Friday, they have just over $22 million in cap space. That number will jolt up to around $40 million if the Vikings part ways with Adrian Peterson.
