Vikings DT Johnson fined for hit vs. Cardinals

By Matthew Coller

Following the Minnesota Vikings win over the Arizona Cardinals, defensive tackle Tom Johnson said he thought a late-game hit on quarterback Carson Palmer was clean. The referees didn’t see it that way at the time, flagging him for roughing the passer and the NFL didn’t see it that way either, fining him $18,231 according to the Pioneer Press.

“He was still in the throwing motion when I hit him, so I thought it was clean,” Johnson told 1500ESPN after the game. “I have no idea, I just thought it was a bad call. In a moment like that and you beat your man and you’re clean, you accelerate through. I went straight to the body, shoulder to the body. I don’t know if it was because I hit him hard or what.”

The penalty on Johnson didn’t alter the result, but it did come at an inopportune time, with just 1:12 remaining and on 4th-and-19.
