Is Sam Bradford having one of the best QB seasons in Vikings history?

By Matthew Coller

The Minnesota Vikings have a history of retread quarterbacks reinvigorating their careers in the Twin Cities. From Warren Moon to Randall Cunningham to Jeff George to Brad Johnson – heck, even Gus Frerotte went 8-3 as a starter in 2008. Sam Bradford has been no different. The former Ram and Eagle is having a strong season, ranking sixth in the NFL in quarterback rating.

How does he stack up against the other greatest Viking QB seasons? If we account for era*, he’s near the top:

*Accounting for era by looking at QB rating above league average

Fran Tarkenton, 1973

Rating above league average: 31.5

Randall Cunningham, 1998

60.9% comp., 3,704 yards, 34 TD, 10 INT, 8.7 YPA, 106.0 rating

Rating above league average: 29.8

Daunte Culpepper, 2004

QB Rating above league average: 29.7

69.2% comp., 4,717 yards, 39 TD, 11 INT, 8.6 YPA, 110.9 rating

Rating above league average: 29.0

Brett Favre, 2009

68.4% comp., 4,202 yards, 33 TD, 7 INT, 7.9 YPA, 107.2 rating

Rating above league average: 26.0

Rating above league average: 23.8

Tommy Kramer, 1986

55.9% comp., 3,000 yards, 24 TD, 10 INT, 8.1 YPA, 92.6 rating

Rating above league average: 21.1

Daunte Culpepper, 2000

62.7% comp., 3,973 yards, 33 TD, 16 INT, 8.3 YPA, 98.0 rating

Rating above league average: 21.8

Daunte Culpepper, 2003

65.0% comp., 3,479 yards,25 TD, 11 INT, 7.7 YPA, 96.4 rating

Rating above league average: 19.8

Warren Moon, 1995

62.2% comp., 4,228 yards, 33 TD, 14 INT, 7.0 YPA, 91.5 rating

Rating above league average: 14.0

Sam Bradford, 2016

69.6% comp., 2,022 yards, 11 TD, 2 INT, 7.1 YPA, 99,9 rating

Rating above league average: 10.8

Honorable mention: Jeff George, 1999 – 94.2 rating in 10 games

So, Bradford is having an above average season and may continue to improve his numbers under interim offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, but he will have to have an outstanding second half of the year to match some of the Vikings’ all-time greats.
