Bleacher Report – Vikings

Veteran Munnerlyn suffers knee, ankle injuries, will undergo MRI

By Judd Zulgad

MINNEAPOLIS — Captain Munnerlyn was wearing a brace on his right leg after the Vikings’ 22-16 overtime loss to Detroit on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Munnerlyn, who sees extensive playing time as the inside corner in the Vikings’ nickel defense, said he will undergo an MRI on Monday after suffering knee and ankle injuries early in the first quarter against the Lions. This comes after the veteran left the Vikings’ loss at Chicago in the fourth quarter last Monday because of a foot injury.

“I wish it was just my foot,” said Munnerlyn, who attempted to return for one play before having to depart for the remainder of the game.

Munnerlyn said he got “bent up” when blocked by Lions tight end Eric Ebron on Detroit’s first possession on a pass that went to Golden Tate. “I felt fine like at first,” Munnerlyn said. “Then I was like, ‘Something’s not right.’ Then third down came around, they threw the ball to Anquan (Boldin), I kind of dove at him and I couldn’t get up. I tried to give it a go, I just couldn’t.”

Munnerlyn was initially replaced in the nickel by Mackensie Alexander but the rookie corner struggled. On the Lions’ 17-play scoring drive in the second quarter, Alexander was called for holding on second-and-2 from the Vikings’ 2-yard line. Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford then went at Alexander on the next play, throwing a 1-yard touchdown pass to Boldin to give Detroit a 10-3 lead.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer replaced Alexander by shifting veteran Terence Newman to the inside in the nickel and used Trae Waynes outside.

Munnerlyn wasn’t the Vikings’ only veteran defensive back to leave the game because of injury. Punt returner Marcus Sherels, who sat out last Monday’s game because of a wrist injury, was forced out Sunday because of an ankle injury.

Wide receiver Stefon Diggs took over punt return duties and averaged 9.7 yards on three returns, including a long of 19 yards.
