Vikings interim OC Shurmur learned from Chip Kelly

By Matthew Coller

After failing to make the playoffs last season, the Philadelphia Eagles parted ways with head coach Chip Kelly, but not for a lack of offensive production during his three-year stint as he ranked second, fifth and 12th in the NFL in points scored. Kelly’s offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur will now be in charge of turning around a Vikings offense that ranks 23rd in points and 31st in yards. In his introductory press conference as interim OC, Shurmur gave a nod to his former head coach’s influence.

“Chip Kelly was an out-of-the-box thinker,” Shurmur said. “We went into the first meeting and the first thing he said was, ‘we’ve done it this way always is not the right answer.’ We were always, with Chip, willing to think outside the box and we stumbled on some really, really good stuff. But there are some things that have been done for a long time for the right reasons…I learned quite a bit.”

Shurmur said that former OC Norv Turner informed him of his decision to step down on Wednesday morning and shortly after that Mike Zimmer asked him to take over as interim coordinator.

The former Rams and Eagles coordinator has a great deal of experience working with quarterback Sam Bradford and was influential in the Vikings’ decision to trade for the him.

“Any time you have a relationship with someone, you can communicate smoother and quicker, so that certainly helps,” Shurmur said.

The first order of business for the offense is finding a way to work around their struggling offensive line. Guard Brandon Fusco said Shurmur walked over to the line yesterday and said, “I believe in you.” The new OC would not go into detail on how he plans to work around an O-line that has suffered the loss of both of its starting tackles, but the most likely scenario is that the Vikings will turn back toward a West Coast offense and/or use some of the Chip Kelly-influenced quick passes and screens that helped Bradford have a terrific second half of 2015.
