Instant analysis: Chicago strikes first, leads 3-0 early

By Matthew Coller

The Minnesota Vikings (5-1) and at Soldier Field to face the Chicago Bears and 1500ESPN is live. Here’s the latest observations from the game…

First quarter

– Jake Long is starting at left tackle for the Vikings and TJ Clemmings is at right tackle. If one of them struggles off the bat, we could see Jeremiah Sirles, who, after watching the All-22 game film, was quite possibly the worst Vikings lineman last week.

– Matt Asiata starts at running back. We’ll see how much Ronnie Hillman plays or if they work the ball to Cordarrelle Patterson in the run game.

– It’s only one pass, but Sam Bradford had a very clean pocket to throw his first pass to Stefon Diggs. The Vikings show a three tight end set on their second run, then spread the field with Hillman at wide receiver.

– The Vikings are punting from the Bears’ 39. Not a very good decision by Mike Zimmer. He has the best defense in the NFL, taking a risk seems like a fair idea.

– Vikings uncharacteristic mistake on a Howard run results in huge gain. Jayron Kearse took a bad angle as the last man back and got burned. Already Andrew Sendejo’s absence hurts the VIkings. Kearse appeared to be benched.

– The Bears are playing two backup guards and Linval Joseph knows it. He single-handedly kept Chicago’s drive to a field goal by blowing up a run play. Chicago kicks a field goal to take a 3-0 lead.

– Bad second drive for Sam Bradford. On his first passing attempt he stared down his receiver and threw into coverage. On second, the Vikings cut the field in half with 3 receivers to his right but he couldn’t find anyone and took a sack. Also: Stop running on first down.

– In the matchup of Xavier Rhodes and Alshon Jeffery, Rhodes wins the first battle, nearly picking off a pass from Cutler.

– Sam Bradford nearly hit Stefon Diggs on a bomb down the middle of the field. Would have been an insane catch. Instead of having the ball inside the 10 or a touchdown, the Vikings punt again…and again on the Bears’ side of the field.

– Jayron Kearse is back in after being sat for several possessions.
