Bleacher Report – Vikings

Bears QB Cutler faces Vikings with little support

By Matthew Coller

For Jay Cutler’s entire career, he has been just good enough to be a franchise quarterback, but not quite good enough for those franchises to feel great about having him as their quarterback. Now Cutler has reached a breaking point with the Chicago Bears as head coach John Fox reportedly does not believe the team’s future is with the former Bronco under center.

The Chicago Tribune reported that sources indicate Fox is “done” with Culter after this season. There was speculation that Brian Hoyer would have remained the team’s starter if Hoyer had not been injured.

At his weekly press conference, Cutler was asked about Fox turning back to him.

“He doesn’t have a choice,” Cutler said. “That about says it all.”

The Bears’ starter has been out since Week 2, but there were questions about whether he was actually healthy enough to play but was being left on the bench. Cutler’s play in the first two games did not give Fox much reason to change his mind as he managed just a 75.7 quarterback rating – although he did set a career high in QB rating last year under Fox and now-Dolphins coach Adam Gase.

Not only does Cutler not appear to have the support of his coach, he doesn’t have much in terms of offensive weapons these days either. The Bears still have Alshon Jeffery, who has 32 receptions, but they lost Martellus Bennett to the Patriots in the offseason and Kevin White to injury for the season.

The only help the Bears’ passing game will have is the presence of running back Jordan Howard, who averages 4.8 yards per carry this season. Though he may have a tough time gaining ground against the Vikings’ solid run defense.

With rumors swirling about Cutler’s future, he could go one of two ways: Either he sees this as an audition for his next job and plays to the best of his ability, or he decides that the writing is already on the wall and whimpers to the end of the season. We will begin to find out the answer to that question on Monday night.
