Jake Long: Rust is not an excuse for struggles vs. Eagles

By Matthew Coller

Tackle Jake Long made his debut as a Minnesota Viking on Sunday and it didn’t exactly go as he or the team hoped. Long was on the wrong end of two strip sacks in his total of only 13 plays. Head coach Mike Zimmer said the recently-signed tackle looked “rusty” against the Philadelphia Eagles.

“No excuses,” Long said Tuesday. “They trusted me when they put me in there. I have to earn that trust and play better.”

The Vikings signed Long after they lost right tackle Andre Smith for the season. TJ Clemmings moved to the right side when Long was in Sunday’s game. Zimmer said Clemmings played better when on the left side, so that may mean fewer reps for Long this week against the Chicago Bears.

The former No. 1 overall pick and Pro Bowler has battled injuries over his last two stops in St. Louis and Atlanta. He said there were no ill-effects of getting in the game against Philadelphia.

“My body felt good, I just didn’t play well enough, nowhere near well enough,” Long said. “Gotta keep getting better. When I get the opportunity, I have to prove it and I will.”
