Jake Long: ‘It’s amazing’ to sign with Vikings

By Matthew Coller

Jake Long said he spent time at both left and right tackle during his first day at practice with the Minnesota Vikings. The former No. 1 overall pick of the Miami Dolphins had gone unsigned due to concerns over past injuries. But Long now has a chance to revive his once-promising career.

“It feels amazing to sign with [the Vikings],” Long said. “I’ve been working hard all offseason and into the season, working out every single day, just waiting for an opportunity and a chance and I got that chance here and I’m going to come here and give it everything I have.”

The brother of Chris and son of NFL legend Howie Long talked for around 10 minutes at Winter Park on Tuesday, saying he is healthy and enjoyed getting back on the practice field.

“I was able to knock some rust off,” he said. “Getting into next week and into some real practices, I’m going to keep knocking the rust off and getting back in the groove of it.”

The three-time Pro Bowl tackle is reunited with Vikings offensive line coach Tony Sparano, who was his head coach in Miami.

“There’s a lot of carry over from the stuff I did with him when I was in Miami,” Long said. “So there’s some new terminology and new plays but luckily we have the bye week and I can really get in the playbook and spend some time with him learn everything.”

Long is familiar with Vikings quarterback Sam Bradford from his two seasons with the St. Louis Rams. He said that the Rams knew Bradford had the talent to perform like he has in Minnesota.

“I know the type of guy he is,” Long said. “He loves this game, he plays hard, physical guy, he takes a lot of hits but he gets right back up. I knew he’d thrive when he came here and he’s showing that.”

The Vikings hope that the addition of Long will reduce the number of hits that Bradford has to take. He was knocked down hard several times last week after left tackle TJ Clemmings whiffed on pass rushers. Clemmings is currently rated Pro Football Focus’s worst tackle in the NFL.
