Andre Smith’s tenure with the Vikings might end up being a short one.
The veteran right tackle, who was signed to a one-year contract this offseason, will undergo surgery to repair the triceps he injured last week against the Giants. Coach Mike Zimmer said Monday that Smith will be placed on injured reserve, meaning his season is almost certainly finished.
Zimmer also confirmed the Vikings worked out free agent tackle Jake Long, a former No. 1 overall pick by Miami. Long, who has battled knee injuries during his career, played for Vikings offensive line coach Tony Sparano when Sparano was head coach of the Dolphins.
Zimmer did not say if the Vikings planned to sign Long.
Smith was replaced by Jeremiah Sirles, who started on Sunday in the Vikings’ victory over Houston. T.J. Clemmings, who has replaced the injured Matt Kalil at left tackle, struggled in the first half of Sunday’s game.
The Vikings (5-0) are the only undefeated team in the NFL and are entering their bye week.
