It’s official: Patterson is a key weapon for Vikings offense

By Matthew Coller

Welcome back, Cordarrelle Patterson.

The former Minnesota Vikings first-round pick is officially a part of the team’s offensive attack again.

It was worth wondering if his five-catch performance against the New York Giants was simply a gimmick aimed at throwing off the Football Giants’ defense, but the Vikings continued to use him as a significant part of their passing attack in their 31-13 win over the Houston Texans.

With Stefon Diggs out, the Vikings looked to Adam Thelien as their top receiver with seven receptions for 127 yards, but Patterson was a secondary option for the second straight week catching four passes for 39 yards.

Early in the fourth quarter, Patterson had an “I’m back” catch in the corner of the end zone where he rose up over the Houston defender and brought in the ball for a touchdown that essentially sealed the game.

This would have been unimaginable a year ago. Patterson was only on the field for 61 offensive plays in 2015 and caught two passes. The Vikings even drafted Laquon Treadwell with the expectation he would be a regular part of their offensive scheme. Instead Patterson has taken the gig and may continue to hold onto it for good.

“Hard work,” Patterson said. “I feel like the coaches watch us each and every day. They see what you do and all the hard work you put in in practice and that’s all I can say, just hard work.”

Patterson’s instant chemistry with Sam Bradford, who has a talent for getting the ball out quickly, has also played a role in his success over the last two games.

“I love CP,” Bradford said. “He’s just one of those guys who has energy every day. His smile out there at practice. He’s just fun to be around. I think the guys feed off of it. He’s had a great past few weeks of practice. Like I said last week, he’s a guy that we’re going to continue to him involved. Obviously, today just like Adam (Thielen) with (Stefon) Diggs down, we knew that he was going to have to make some plays for us and he did.”
