Vikings preparing for Wilfork’s size, smarts

By Matthew Coller

Even without JJ Watt in the lineup, the Houston Texans’ defensive line presents a formidable challenge for the Minnesota Vikings’ offense. It starts in the middle with future Hall of Fame nose tackle Vince Wilfork.

“He’s very smart,” Vikings guard Alex Boone said. “A lot of people don’t know that. I’m sure he’d probably wipe that off, but you can tell when he’s thinking about things, when he’s seeing the motions and he’s seeing what guys are doing and he’s looking at your stance, he’s looking at your hand and he’s looking at how your feet are. He’s one of those guys that’s reading you as you’re reading him. He’s not to be underestimated.”

Wilfork presents a challenge for a Vikings running game that had its best day on Monday against the New York Giants, clearing 100 yards for the first time.

“He really looks good,” offensive coordinator Norv Turner said. “They list him at 325; I don’t think he’s been 325 since he was in the 8th grade. I mean he’s big. It takes a lot to move him — you’re not going to move him. … He’s really playing well in the middle and he occupies a lot of space and you have to work to move him.”

The Texans’ defense currently ranks sixth in Yards Per Play and ninth in points allowed.
