Bleacher Report – Vikings

Zimmer enjoying the personality of his defense

By Matthew Coller

The Minnesota Vikings have a great case for being the best defense in the NFL. Not only are they at the top of the league in many statistical categories through three weeks, but they’ve also manhandled two of the best quarterbacks alive in Aaron Rodgers and Cam Newton. The combination of winning and comfort, head coach Mike Zimmer says, has allowed many players’ personalities to come out in the process.

“[Danielle Hunter] is starting to come out of his shell a little bit,” Zimmer said Friday. “When he would get a sack last year he would clap once and go back to the huddle, now he’s flexing and things like that so he’s talking more and I think he feels a lot more confident in everything that he’s doing. It’s funny because I see guys like Shamar Stephen, who would never say a word and now he’s talking to the other guys saying stuff and Hunter’s kind of like that and [Anthony] Barr, he’s changed a lot in his demeanor. A year ago, he wouldn’t say diddly and now he’s talking a lot. It’s actually kind of fun to see some of these young guys that start to mature a little bit.”

Zimmer was asked why he thinks the players are coming out of their shells more.

“I think it’s being comfortable around teammates, but I also think it’s feeling comfortable with between systems and things like that too,” he said.

Being 3-0 probably doesn’t hurt either.
