Zimmer: Joseph ‘taking a liking’ to pass rush role

By Matthew Coller

Minnesota Vikings nose tackle Linval Joseph has always been a force in the run game, but this year he has three sacks in three games and has become a legitimate threat to opposing quarterbacks. Head coach Mike Zimmer had challenged him to become a better pass rusher and the former New York Giant has answered the bell.

“I think he’s taking a liking to it more,” Zimmer said. “He’s a guy that wants to try to play the run and power you in there and get his body on bodies. He’s been in there a lot due to situations that we’ve been in. I think the more that he understands the situations in the game and turns it loose because he can rush the passer. He can be a very good pass rusher. It’s just sometimes he has to be a little bit more OK and just go. He knows it’s a pass, but he still wants to play the run.”

Joseph has three sacks in three games, which is nice, but he also creates pass rushing lanes and 1-on-1 match ups for his teammates by often requiring a center and guard to slow him down.

“I’m just picking up where I left off and things are just falling into place for me right now,” Joseph said.
