Panthers LB Kuechly, coach Rivera break down Bradford

By Matthew Coller

Sam Bradford couldn’t have asked for much better a debut than the one he had against the Green Bay Packers, posting a 121.2 rating and 17-14 victory. Now Bradford will face one of the most talented defenses in the NFL in the Carolina Panthers. On Wednesday, linebacker Luke Kuechly and head coach Ron Rivera talked on a conference call about going up against Bradford:

Kuechly on what he’s seen from Bradford when he’s faced him in the past:

“There are things that you look at that will stay consistent,” he said. “I think things will probably remain the same. With Bradford in there, you don’t have a huge opportunity to see him with the Vikings and and what they’re doing but you can look back, we played against him a couple times when he was in [St. Louis] and Philadelphia and you kind of know what you’re going to get with him. He’s a smart guy, he’s very intelligent, he knows what you’re doing on defense, he knows how to attack with an offense and he throws a great ball. The game against the Packers he threw a beautiful ball to Stefon Diggs for a touchdown and one to Rudolph in the back of the end zone. He played extremely well.”

Kuechly on Bradford getting the ball out quickly:

“I think that lends itself to Sam understanding what defenses are doing to him and where the soft spots are going to be. You have to try to affect him any way you can, whether it’s getting your hands up, getting a good push on the offensive line and get guys in his face. But when he’s throwing the ball as quick as he is, it’s tough to get a whole lot of disruption on him, so we’re going to do our best to try to make him uncomfortable, get guys around him and get hands in his face.”

Ron Rivera on watching Bradford’s debut:

“I think he throws the ball well. He has a good arm, he makes good decisions, all you have to do is watch the tape. Watching on TV, then watching the tape, I think he does exactly what Norv wants him to do and does a nice job with those things. It looks like he’s already developing a nice report with different receivers. If you watch how he connected with Stefon Diggs, you watch how he’s used Kyle Rudolph, these guys are playmakers for him. Norv is going to try to put him in the best position to have success. ”
