Bleacher Report – Vikings

Vikings will play rookie WR Laquon Treadwell when ‘time is correct’

By Derek Wetmore

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. – First-round pick Laquon Treadwell didn’t get a snap in his first game as a pro.

It’s not that unusual for a rookie to not get any action in his first game with the Vikings (see: Diggs, Stefon 2015), but it raised a few eyebrows because Treadwell is a highly touted first-round pick, whereas Diggs was a fifth rounder a year ago.

Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer was asked Monday if the team has a plan to ease Treadwell into the games, or if he still has some work to do to get on the field.

“He still has work to do. We still have to keep getting him going,” Zimmer said.

Treadwell suffered a major leg injury in college, but he’s reportedly clear from that, and he played extensively in the preseason. The Vikings do have some reasonable depth at wide receiver, and their pass catchers did really well Sunday – with the exception of Charles Johnson, who didn’t stand out much.

Diggs had a great game, Adam Thielen made some critical catches, and even Cordarrelle Patterson got in on the fun with a good route and a great catch when Shaun Hill fired one his way.

“As you’ve seen, Diggs was inactive for three weeks last year,” Zimmer continued. “We’re trying to do things right, get him ready to play and get him ready to go when the time is correct. I think all these young guys need to learn, not just him but all these guys, need to learn about professional football a little bit. It’s not like you just come in and you’re the best player on the field right now.”

Diggs was inactive the first few games of the season last year, and the only reason he saw the field as early as he did was because Charles Johnson got hurt. Treadwell is a little different story, because he’s not exactly the same type of split-end receiver that Johnson and Diggs were in 2015. Treadwell is more of a physical presence than those two, which has led some to suggest Treadwell in time will be used as a red-zone target for the Vikings.

Their offense stalled out time and again Sunday, although that had as much – or more – to do with the running game as it did the passing attack.

Zimmer was asked if there’s a moment in which one can tell with a young player has turned the corner on being a “professional football” player.

“Well, you think you know but then sometimes they go back around the other corner,” Zimmer said with a grin. “You just keep plugging away, keep trying to get them better. Keep staying on them, give them extra meeting time. Make sure they’re doing the things right, just go from there.”
