Report: Teddy Bridgewater’s surgery scheduled for Thursday

By Derek Wetmore

Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater will have surgery to repair the torn ligaments in his leg on Thursday, according to a report from ESPN’s Ed Werder.

Last week GM Rick Spielman said that the Vikings and medical professionals had done a ton of research on similar injuries, and Spielman said he was confident that Bridgewater would make a full recovery and resume his football career.

Spielman didn’t put a timeline on a recovery, but most estimates for an ACL tear and “other damage” like Bridgewater has would require 9-12 months, which calls into question his availability for the start of the 2017 season. That’s why Spielman said that Sam Bradford’s 2-year contract was a critical component of the trade with the Eagles.

Werder also reported that the Vikings believe Bridgewater “will make fully recovery, resume NFL career. But more to be known after surgery.”

That may sound ominous, but Spielman was quick to point out Thursday that the Vikings and Bridgewater were fortunate that his nerves and arteries were not damaged, which would have been a potentially much more serious issue.

Still, Bridgewater likely faces a long road to recovery.

In only slightly related news, if jokester teammates continue to untie Bridgewater’s shoes when he can’t reach them, the QB now has a shoe-tier on call: head coach Mike Zimmer.
