Spielman to Peter King: ‘We did the best we could possibly do’

By Matthew Coller

In Monday’s edition of Monday Morning Quarterback, long-time national NFL reporter Peter King talked to both Rick Spielman and Howie Roseman about the Minnesota Vikings’ trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for Sam Bradford.

There’s a noticeable theme in Spielman’s comments: The Vikings needed to be aggressive because their roster is good enough to win this year.

“At the end, this is what it comes down to: Did you do the best you possibly could do for your team?” Spielman told King. “And we did the best we possibly could do. I think we put our team in the best possible position we can. Now we just see how it works out.”

While the price for Bradford is high (a first-round pick and a 2018 pick that could become a second depending on team performance), Spielman said in the MMQB piece that the cost for a trade with almost any team would be exorbitant because the Vikings were desperate after Teddy Bridgewater’s injury.

Some teams asked for a first-round pick and a core young player,” Spielman said. “I can understand the pick. But we worked too hard over the past three years to put all that time and energy into drafting and developing a solid core of this team. I was taken aback who they were asking for. Players who’d been in the Pro Bowl. I mean, in the off-season you’ve got time. There’s not blood in the water in the off-season. But now there was.”

Spielman notes that he was told to “be aggressive” by Vikings ownership and that he feels Bradford has not been on a team with the caliber of running back of Adrian Peterson before, which should take weight off his shoulders.

The Vikings’ GM also reiterated what he said on a conference call on Saturday: That the second year on Bradford’s contract was a key part of the deal because, “No one knows how long it’s going to take Teddy to recover.”

King writes that he does not know whether Bradford will start Week 1 against Tennessee, but Norv Turner did once design a gameplan for a similar situation – when Bernie Kosar was picked up by the Dallas Cowboys and played him on short notice in 1993. Turner was the offensive coordinator then, just as he is in Minnesota now.
