Bleacher Report – Vikings

Bradford says he does not know if he’s starting vs. Titans

By Matthew Coller

Learning an NFL offense normally takes the entire offseason, but if the Minnesota Vikings plan to start Sam Bradford Week 1 against the Tennessee Titans, he will have to catch on in just a few days.

Bradford said he has not been told whether he will start, but is working to be ready for Sunday’s game.

“You know, that’s the goal is to progress to that point to where I feel comfortable enough to get out there and play if I’m needed to,” he said following Monday’s practice. “But I can’t tell you if that’s going to be the case or not.”

The Vikings acquired Bradford from the Eagles on Saturday, dealing a first-round pick and a 2018 selection that could end up as a second-rounder depending on how Minnesota performs. The former No. 1 overall pick of the Rams has been stuffing his brain with the Vikings’ offense since he was acquired.

How long will it take for him to feel comfortable in the offense?

“I think it just takes time, it takes reps, unfortunately we don’t have a lot of either of those,” Bradford said.

“It’s hard to explain exactly what it would be but command of the offense,” Zimmer said. “Understand what we’re doing. Know where to go with the ball. Know the checks.”

Minnesota’s new starter acknowledged that he is receiving a little help from his friends, one of which is backup Shaun Hill, who was the No. 2 quarterback in St. Louis during Bradford’s time with the Rams.

“We had a great relationship in St. Louis, we had a great room there,” Bradford said. “So it’s been nice having a familiar face in the quarterback room, being able to talk to him. ‘OK, we talked about this play in the meeting room but how do you really see it? Where does the ball go versus this coverage? He’s been super helpful so it’s been great seeing Shaun again.”

Mike Zimmer was noncommittal on whether Bradford would be starting or if Hill would get the nod.

“He throws the ball great,” Zimmer said after practice. “He’s been a starting quarterback, a No. 1 pick the draft. I said after Teddy got hurt that we were going to try to figure out a way how to continue to win and play good and we’re going to do everything we possibly can.”

Having many different offensive coordinators and systems usually isn’t beneficial to anybody in football, but in this case, it may help.

“I’ve had to learn new offenses in the past,” he said. “I don’t know if I’ve ever had to learn one quite this fast or in this much of a hurry. So yesterday kind of got thrown into the fire everything at once and I think that’s how we’re going to have to do it. But as far as an exact timeframe, I’m not really sure.”
