Vikings sign three 2016 draft picks, QB Joel Stave to practice squad

By Judd Zulgad

Moritz Böhringer, Willie Beavers and Stephen Weatherly did not make the Vikings’ 53-man roster, but the 2016 draft picks were signed to the team’s practice squad on Sunday.

Also signed to practice squad was rookie quarterback Joel Stave, who started the Vikings’ final preseason game. Stave was an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin.

The other played signed to the practice squad included rookie tight end Kyle Carter; second-year guard Isame Faciane; rookie running back C.J. Ham; first-year defensive tackle Toby Johnson and rookie cornerback Tre Roberson.

Böhringer, a wide receiver from Germany, received plenty of attention when he was picked by the Vikings in the sixth round of the draft last spring. Böhringer, who had played for the Schwabisch Hall Unicorns of the German Football League, became the first player to be drafted by an NFL team directly from Europe.

Beavers’ failure to make the final roster had to be considered a surprise since the Vikings took the guard from Western Michigan in the fourth round. Weatherly, a defensive end from Vanderbilt, was the first of the Vikings’ two picks in the seventh round. Safety Jayron Kearse, who made the roster, was Minnesota’s second pick in the seventh round.

Every member of the Vikings’ 2016 draft class remains a member of the organization.

Teams are allowed to sign 10 players to their practice squad, so the Vikings still have one spot open.
